Local SEO for service businesses: what actually influences map results
Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. Here’s what that means in practice — and what to do first.

For most service businesses, the map results that appear for “near me” searches send more calls than any other organic listing. Google is unusually direct about how they work: its help centre says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence (Tips to improve your local ranking). You can’t change distance, so the work is in the other two.
Relevance: make the profile match what you do
- Choose the most accurate primary category, then add secondary categories only where they truly apply.
- List your actual services, with plain descriptions.
- Keep hours, holiday hours and service areas accurate — inaccurate hours cost calls.
- Match the business name to your real-world name. Adding keywords breaks Google’s guidelines.
Google’s guidelines for representing your business are short and worth reading in full; suspensions often come from small breaches of them.
Prominence: earn it, don’t fake it
Prominence reflects how well known a business is: reviews, links, articles and directory listings all contribute. Two habits make the biggest difference for most local businesses:
- Ask every happy customer for a review, at the moment the job is done, with a direct link. Google’s own tips for getting reviews are a good baseline. Never offer incentives or filter requests to only happy customers — both are against policy.
- Reply to reviews, including critical ones, briefly and calmly.
Your website still matters
The profile links to your site, and the site supports relevance. Create a page for each core service, and for service areas where you have something genuine to say. Add your name, address and phone number consistently, and consider LocalBusiness structured data.
What to measure
Rankings move around by street and device, so judge local SEO on calls, direction requests and website visits from the profile, and on the enquiries that follow.
