Backlinks & earned authority
Earning backlinks without shortcuts: building authority the durable way
Links still help search engines understand which sites are trusted — but bought or manufactured links carry real risk. Here’s how to earn authority that lasts.

Backlinks — links from other websites to yours — remain one of the ways search engines judge which pages are trusted. But links are not a switch that guarantees rankings, and the fastest ways to get them are the riskiest. Google’s spam policies specifically describe link schemes, including buying links that pass ranking credit and excessive link exchanges.
What a useful link looks like
- It comes from a real site your customers or peers might actually read.
- It points to a page that deserves it — a guide, a tool, a local resource.
- It was given because the content or the business was worth mentioning.
Durable ways to earn links
- Publish something worth citing. A clear guide to a common local question, a calculator, or a checklist people bookmark. Google’s guidance on helpful, people-first content is the right standard.
- Use the relationships you already have. Suppliers, associations, chambers of commerce, sponsored community events and partners often list the businesses they work with.
- Offer genuine expertise to journalists and local media. A practitioner who answers a topical question clearly is quotable.
- Fix broken mentions. Find places that mention your business without linking, or link to pages that no longer exist, and ask politely for a correction.
What to avoid
- Paying for links that pass ranking credit, or “guaranteed DA 50 links”.
- Private blog networks and mass guest-post packages.
- Scaled, low-value content created only to attract links — Google added a specific policy on this in March 2024.
How to judge progress
Count links from relevant, real sites — not totals from a tool. Then look at what matters: visibility for priority searches and the enquiries that follow. Authority builds slowly; it is also much harder for competitors to copy.
